The Mail on Sunday reports today that there is an estimated 400 million old £1 coins still in circulation, leaving just 1 week for us all to either spend them or exchange them for the new £1 coin. Shops and businesses will no longer be obliged to accept the old £1 coin from next Sunday, although they can still be exchanged at post offices and banks for an unspecified period.
